The Vane Manor felt like a mausoleum that night. Rain lashed against the tall windows as Sarah and Julian pulled up in their black Mercedes. They walked in looking like the power couple they once were, but I could see the cracks. Sarah’s makeup was a little too thick, hiding the stress lines. Julian’s suit was sharp, but his eyes were darting, restless.
I stood in the shadows of the mezzanine, watching them enter the foyer. Silas greeted them with a stiff formality.
"Where is this partner of yours, Silas?" Julian asked, his voice booming with a false confidence that didn't reach his eyes. "We’ve heard rumors about Apex Horizon. If you’ve got a line to them, we need to talk. They’ve been... aggressive."
"Aggressive is one word for it," Silas said, gesturing toward the dining room. "I prefer 'efficient.' Please, sit. My partner is just finishing a call."
They sat. The table was set for four. The tension was so thick you could have carved it with the silver steak knives.
I waited. I let them drink their first glass of wine. I let Julian brag about his "vision" for the city. Then, I walked down the stairs.
The sound of my footsteps seemed to silence the room. Sarah turned first. She looked at me, and for a second, nothing happened. Then, the color drained from her face so fast I thought she might faint.
"Ethan?" she whispered, her glass slipping from her hand and shattering on the floor. Red wine pooled on the white rug like blood.
"My name is Arthur Sterling," I said, taking my seat at the head of the table. "But you can call me whatever makes you comfortable, Sarah. After all, authenticity is everything, right?"
Julian stood up so fast his chair toppled. "What is this? Ethan? You’ve been alive this whole time? You son of a—"
"Sit down, Julian," Silas said, his voice a low growl. "Or the security team will ensure you never stand again."
Julian sat, his face a mottled purple. Sarah was shaking. "Ethan... we thought... everyone said you were gone. Where have you been? What is this 'Arthur Sterling' nonsense?"
"I’ve been building, Sarah," I said, leaning forward. "While you were busy mocking me for 'crying in the shower,' I was acquiring your debt. While you were 'managing the dead weight,' I was buying the land under your office building. Apex Horizon isn't a ghost firm. It's me. And Silas."
"Dad?" Sarah turned to Silas, her eyes wide with betrayal. "You helped him? You helped him destroy me? I’m your daughter!"
"You're a disgrace," Silas said calmly. "You conspired with this thug to sabotage a man of talent. You lied about your own child. You brought shame to a name that took me fifty years to build. Ethan didn't destroy you, Sarah. You provided the blueprints. He just followed them."
"We can fix this," Sarah pleaded, her voice rising to a frantic pitch. "Ethan, okay, I’m sorry. I was under pressure. Julian made me do it! He told me if I didn't help him sink your firm, he’d fire me. I did it for us! For Maya!"
"Don't mention Maya," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper that silenced her instantly. "I have the DNA results, Sarah. I’ve had them since the night of the gala. I know she’s Julian’s. I also know you’ve been funneling Silas’s 'investments' into Julian’s offshore accounts to pay off his gambling debts."
Julian lunged across the table then, reaching for my throat. He was fast, but Silas’s head of security was faster. Before Julian’s hand even crossed the centerpiece, he was pinned to the floor, his face pressed against the hardwood.
"Get him out of here," Silas ordered. "Take him to the gates and leave him for the police. The embezzlement files are already at the DA’s office."
As Julian was dragged out, screaming threats, Sarah collapsed into her chair. She looked at me, her eyes streaming with tears. "Ethan... please. I have nothing. If Blackwood goes under, I’m bankrupt. I’ll lose the house. Maya will have nowhere to go."
"Maya is going to be fine," I said. "Because Silas and I have already set up a trust for her. She’ll be attending the best boarding school in Europe, far away from your influence and Julian’s toxicity. You, however, are done."
"You can't do this," she sobbed. "You loved me."
"I loved a woman who didn't exist," I said, standing up. "The woman I loved wouldn't have stood on a stage and humiliated her husband for a laugh. She wouldn't have sabotaged his dreams. You showed me who you were that night, Sarah. And I finally believed you."
I walked toward the door.
"Wait!" she cried out. "Where are you going? What happens to me now?"
I stopped at the threshold. I didn't turn around. "You have twenty-four hours to vacate the house. After that, the locks change. You wanted to be a 'power player,' Sarah. Now you get to see what it’s like when the power is turned off."
But as I walked out into the rain, I felt a strange vibration in my pocket. It was the burner phone. A new message from an unknown number.
You think you’ve won, Ethan? Check the vault at the firm. The gala wasn't the only trap Sarah set for you.
I froze. There was one more piece of the puzzle I hadn't seen. And it was the one thing that could still ruin everything...
